Ernst Kurtzahn |

Ernst Kurtzahn (1879 - 1939), ship ingenieur, freemason and teacher, wrote in 1920 the first esoterical German Tarot book: DER TAROT. Die kabbalistische Methode der Zukunftserforschung als Schlüssel zum Okkultismus. Gustave Meyrink had published his famous book Der Golem"in 1915 in context to some movies of Paul Wegener (Der Golem, 1914, Der Golem und die Tänzerin, 1917, and Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam, 1920 (later followed by the films of Julien Duvivier (Le Golem, 1936) and Martin Fric (Císaruv pekar a pekaruv císar, 1951). A short passage in the book, which was quickly popularisized, refered to the game of Tarot (see the German passage) Kurtzahn wrote short after this success of Meyrink's films. The Kurtzahn text was followed by A. Frank Glahn ( * 1895, + 1941): Deutsches Original Tarot, in 1924, produced with 78 cards in low quality.
According to this information: Before Kurtzahn existed a "Buch Thot", Stuttgart 1857, Scheible (editor). The esoterical oriented Dr. Hummel (pseudonym "Laarss") collected material especially of French origin, which he gave to Kurtzahn. Kurtzahn based his Tarot (called Tarot Daityanus) on the interpretation of Etteilla, as it already was described by the Scheible-edition. The cards were printed in the book and were offered for sale by the Talis-Verlag Leipzig. The correct name of the Scheible text 1857 should be: "Theoretischer und praktischer Unterricht über das Buch Thot oder über die höhere Kraft, Natur und Mensch, mit Zuverlässigkeit die Geheimnisse des Lebens zu enthüllen und Orakel zu ertheilen, nach der Egyptier wunderbarer Kunst. - Neue Aufl.. - Stuttgart : Scheible, 1857. - 94 S., 78 Bl. : Ill.; (dt.) (Kleiner Wunder-Schauplatz der geheimen Wissenschaften, Mysterien, Theosophie ... / hrsg. von J. Scheible ; 14)" According to a private information this text was offered on the web: "Eteilla (d. i. Aliette): Theoretischer und praktischer Unterricht über das Buch Thot oder über die höhere Kraft, Natur und Mensch, mit Zuverlässigkeit die Geheimnisse des Lebens zu enthüllen und Orakel zu ertheilen. Leipzig, Baumgärtner 1793. Mit einem Kupfer. Tit., IV, 106 S. Neuere Lwd. mit eingeb. gest. Orig.-Umschlag. 600,-" If one takes this as a serious argument, then an earlier German translation of Eteilla's text existed as "First German Tarot book" already in 1793. Publications
