Gertrude Moakley
Gertrude Moakley, author of "The Tarot
Cards Painted by Bonifacio Bembo for the Visconti-Sforza Family. An Iconographic and Historical Study." (1966) was a New York librarian. "Moakley's book is the first detailed, art-historical analysis of a specific deck and its unique iconography." judged Michael J. Hurst, and he adds, "(Decades later, we are still waiting for a second.)".
Stuart Kaplan in an interview credited her for the observation, that some of the Rider Waite pips might have relationships to the Sola-Busca Tarocchi cards. " Originally, people thought that Arthur Edward Waite had influenced her" (Pamela Smith) "greatly to do the deck -- but a woman by the name of Gertrude Moakley, who died last year, was a New York librarian in 1938 who researched and found out that the Sola Busca Tarot cards which were done in the fifteenth century, had some of the pip cards as full illustrations. There are nine or ten of the cards from the Sola Busca deck that Pamela Colman Smith actually redid in her deck. So obviously, she had gone to either the British Museum or the British Library, researched and found that deck, and when she did her own illustrations, she drew heavily on those."
