Gabriel Peignot (1767 - 1849)

Étienne-Gabriel Peignot was a French bibliograph with considerable literary production, born at Arc-en-Barrois (Haute-Marne) at 15 May 1767 and died at Dijon at 14 august 1849. Between his many works, from which only one seems to relate to playing cards, is the Dictionnaire de bibliologie (1802–4, 3 vols.), which is regarded as the first encyclopedia devoted to the world of books.
